Market Recap – June 9, 2025

Let’s take a moment to address some of the big headlines overshadowing what was actually a strong week for the markets.

The S&P 500 had a very strong week, up around 2%. Other indexes like the Russell 2000 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq also saw positive gains. Meanwhile, the bond market was fairly steady, with the 10-year Treasury yield staying around 4.5%. We’re also keeping an eye on creeping unemployment and elevated inflation.

Elon Musk & Trump “Feud”

A lot of attention has been on the spat between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Personally, I have great respect for Elon Musk and his achievements. Trump is also pushing a tax bill that, while not as aggressive as he’d like, is a political compromise to get legislation passed.

While I support tax cuts, they must be paired with spending cuts. If we don’t get spending under control, we’ll run into serious challenges in the next few years or decades. Historically, reducing taxes and cutting government bloat allows people and businesses to invest in more productive ways. So while I’m in favor of tax cuts, we must also shrink government spending.

ICE Riots & Social Unrest

Another major headline is the ICE-related riots in cities like Minneapolis and Los Angeles. The government has responded with military support to ensure ICE can do its job. Rioting isn’t a productive way to address these issues—there are elections to express political will.

Despite the chaos, I don’t see this as a huge concern for the markets in the immediate term.

A Positive Outlook Amid the Noise

So what’s the takeaway for this week? You might be glued to your phone, doom scrolling and worrying about the future. But as I looked at the early market data this morning, the markets are opening strong—some indexes up 1–2% in the pre-market. Why? Because there’s positive news too. There’s a major trade talk with China happening soon in London, and with Chinese exports to the U.S. at a five-year low, it’s a chance to push for fairer trade practices.

Perspective & Encouragement

Here’s my encouragement for you: turn off the news, stop the doom scrolling, and go outside. Smell some flowers, breathe in the fresh air. Don’t put your trust in Trump, Musk, or media pundits. We trust in the name of the Lord our God. Everything is part of His bigger plan.

Remember Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and money.” So focus on loving your family, serving your community, and being good stewards of the money God has given you. Let Him handle the rest.
