Written by Tim Russell about his book The Good Steward

In many ways, I’ve been helped by the teaching and philosophy of Dave Ramsey. He has provided a needed voice calling for the avoidance of debt and the necessity of budgeting. In our stewardship ministry, Life Institute, we often get the question, “How are you different from Dave Ramsey?”

Caution is Needed

Financial Peace University has helped millions of families tackle their debt and build wealth. In these classes, put on in churches, schools, and businesses across the country, Dave Ramsey proclaims wisdom that is rooted in Scripture. However, this beautiful foundation is never developed or fleshed out in the class. He may quote a passage or two here or there but never shows how these truths connect back to the character of our loving, gracious God. The connection to the gospel is never explored. In fairness to Ramsey, that’s not his wheelhouse. He’s appealing to a broad audience who may not appreciate the Biblical connections.

There is a subtle but dangerous pull in these classes which often leaves its students with a greater love/desire for wealth. While money and wealth is not a bad thing (it’s actually a good thing), the all-consuming pursuit of wealth and riches can be destructive to our faith, family, and church. The treatment of these topics really needs to be done based upon a solid foundation of Grace and commitment to God.

Gospel-centered alternative to Dave Ramsey

This is one of the reasons why we wrote The Good Steward. In this book, we establish a firm foundation of Biblical stewardship. We call readers to remain committed to God, the giver of all good gifts. When we teach the important principles of saving and investing, it is done with a steady reminder to love God more than wealth and a challenge to grow in generosity while growing in wealth. This book is a Gospel-centered alternative to Dave Ramsey.

FPU and classes like it are NOT bad, but those who want to be good stewards of their resources should seek to augment their understanding of their role through reading The Good Steward. They will be encouraged in their sanctification while being equipped to take the steps needed to take seriously the call to prepare for the future.
